treasure hunting

Geocaching is hobby that we do as a family. It is kinda like a modern day orienteering but relies on GPS navigation rather then solely on compass work. I discovered the idea it a few years ago and we have found caches in many different places, every time we travel we find some either along the way or near where we are staying. We sometimes spend a whole day during the school holidays finding them in our local area or with my sister's family. It is a world wide hobby ( while we were in Jasper they advertised that they had some around town. but we without a GPS device we couldn't find them) and cost nothing except for the app for your phone (about $10) or if your keen, a hand held GPS device. The kids love it because sometimes there is "swaps" and it is challenging to find them, because they well hidden and often very small. It's amazing where you find them. Lots of the time we can be enjoying a picnic somewhere and there will be one hidden in the park, once one was only 5metres away from us. Other Geocaching teams hide the caches and set the location so they can be found, we love the creative hides even if they are the most frustrating (the one in the train track nail took at least 45 minutes to find!). I must admit I'm pretty sure we look like idiots while wandering around aimlessly looking at our phone, sometimes arguing about the direction we are heading, or bush bashing through scrub without a track obviously, heading in the wrong direction but we are having fun together and that's what life is all about.

We have a comedian in the family.

I love four year olds humour, it's hilarious because it's not really that funny! At this age they are just getting the idea of jokes while still trying to figure out what makes people laugh.

Most evenings, during dinner, Ivy has been sharing jokes with us, and as is typical for this age range they generally centre around knock knocks and varying things that cross the road.
Here is a few that made us laugh!

Why did the cow cross the road?
To go shopping!

Why did the elephant put it's trunk on it's foot?
Cause it was itchy!

Knock knock
Who's there?
Candle
Candle who?
There's one right over there!

Knock knock
Who's there?
Door
Door who?
There's a door right there!
( At this point I said "that's the same as the other one" her reply? "Just write it down, it's funny")

Why did the lion cross the road?
To get to the trampoline

Why did the tiger cross the road?
To get to the trampoline...they both wanted to go so they went!

Why did the chewing gum cross the road?
Cause it was stuck to the monkeys foot, he had no fingers or hands!

Why did the people cross the road?
Cause there was a red light and they accidentally passed!

I'm not sure if she will make it to the comedy club with these jokes but for the moment she is making us laugh!

See you later

Caves beach.

Travelling home from Sydney last weekend we decided to stop at Caves beach. It was a lovely day and as we very rarely stop along the way, unless it's for petrol, it was a nice change of pace. I can't remember taking the little kids here before and they quickly ran off on their own, exploring the caves that line the beautiful coastline. Not having their cosie's on didn't stop the kids from wading through the water that was in the caves (as long as I tested out the depth first! ) and our shorts become so wet that Ivy's kept slipping down because of their weight. As late afternoon is my favourite time to go to the beach, it isn't too hot and not many people, this stop over was perfect. I think in the future, stop overs on the Sydney run might happen more often!

Check out take3.org.au/ to see why I collect rubbish (in particular plastic) off the beach every time we visit.

Car dreaming

After seeing a link on facebook for the Toyota dream car competition, the kids decided to have a go at designing their own car. I love projects that inspire kids to be creative and use their imaginations, so out came all our crafting supplies. Ivy at first was inspired to create her dream car and soon splattered paint randomly over her page. Before long though, she declared that she "didn't want to do a car anymore, I just want to paint my favourite colours"( fair enough!"). Jay on the other hand thought for a while about the task and decided that he wanted to create a soccer car. It had a field with players, as well as cameras and big screens to televise the game to the people outside. He also included a snow repelling devise which draws in the snow through tubes on the top and disposes of it through the back and front of the vehicle. Although the designs will not make it to this years competition deadline, both kids had a great time working on their projects.

Along the way

Along the way to the art gallery...

She watched as her brother rode down the "big " hill

Then decided to walk her bike down.

She checked out her training wheels because "they are too wobbly".

He point out how much further we had to ride.

She was " sooooo thirsty".

He wasn't happy with his bell and thought mine might be better.

They spotted some ducks who promptly swam away.

They couldn't go any further without having a snack break.

They spotted a caterpillar, she was very upset that she didn't have her camera to take a photo.
(It is there, I promise!)

He locked up the bikes...

While she swung on the rails.

He tried to climb a tree...

While she found feathers for her "collection".

She checked out the mosaic on the path

Then swang on the swing.
